Parker Financial Literacy Scholarship
Parker Financial, LLC established an annual financial literacy scholarship award in November of 2009. The Parker Financial - Financial Literacy Scholarship is the first award offered by the Charles County Scholarship Fund, Inc.'s scholarship program with the specific purpose of rewarding local high school seniors who demonstrate a commitment toward advancing their financial literacy.
The $250 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior attending a Charles County Public School with at least a 3.0 G.P.A. who has successfully completed a personal finance course such as personal financial literacy or investment management.
Young adults need financial literacy to develop good personal finance skills to make informed decisions and achieve financial success. "When students are engaged early on in learning; particularly about earning an income, budgeting, saving and investing, charitable giving, and managing debt --- they gain powerful skills to shape their own lives and make a difference in their local community. That's why Parker Financial, LLC is dedicated to rewarding local students who have successfully advance their financial literacy," says Christine Parker, CFP, President of Parker Financial, LLC.
In 2011, financial literacy became a graduation requirement for Charles County students. Only six counties in the state of Maryland have this policy, including Calvert County.
For many high school students, planning for college is their first major financial planning goal that requires budgeting, saving, and planning for college expenses. This scholarship will help them get started on the right foot towards achieving their goals and objectives. Parker Financial helps clients plan well to live well at every major milestone.

2010 Parker Financial Literacy Scholarship Award Recipient:
Falyn D. Donaldson, North Point High School for Science, Technology and Industry, Class of 2010. Falyn is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport
and Recreation Management at Temple University.
Personal statement by Falyn, 'I strive to be the best person I can be…' is a quote that relates directly to
my upbringing and my outlook on life. As
a high school senior I feel that I am about as prepared as I can be to face the
obstacles that lie ahead of me as I finish high school and begin my college
career. For this, I have my parents to
thank as they have prepared me with the foundation required to make tough
decisions, such as what college I will attend and what course of study I will
select. I feel that I have pushed myself
during the first three and a half years of high school by maintaining a high
GPA while playing on a sport each season, up until this my senior year. I have involved myself in numerous activities
during my high school career from being selected as a co-editor for my school yearbook
to serving as a Tech Sergeant in our Air Force JROTC program. I believe that the culmination of my
accomplishments was being inducted into the National Honor Society, as this
provided me with confirmation that the leadership and service components of my
application came through loud and clear to the selection committee.
The lessons that I have learned
by playing sports all my life will equip me with the ability to conquer many
obstacles as I embark on my college career.
I feel as if the Sports management field is one of very few places where
I know I could be truly happy everyday when I wake up to go to work. I realize that this profession could be
particularly stressful because it involves you managing not only your own
career, but the careers of others. On
the other hand, I feel that I have done due diligence in preparing myself for
this task by taking a rigorous schedule that includes three AP classes and
working part-time in this my senior year.
Professionally, I would like to break gender barriers in such a
male-dominated field. I feel as if I
could bring something new to the table; a female who could represent the sports
industry not only because of looks, but for pure knowledge and love of the
sports atmosphere. Despite the fact that
I have some potentially life-changing events in the not so distant future, I
feel that I am ready for the next step, ready to begin the next chapter of my
life, knowing that I have the support of those closest to me."
